INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

"There's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing." -Sir Randulph Fiennes

Programs will be held rain or shine.  As a part of our program's philosophy to let children experience nature with all 5 senses, children will be permitted to get muddy, wet, and play in the dirt. Your child is required to be dressed appropriately for the weather each day at VFS. An inappropriately clothed child could have a negative experience in a forest school.

After a rainy or muddy day, it is the parents responsibility to make sure clothing and shoes are dry before the next class. Please make sure you and your child are fully aware we will be outside 100% of the day.

Children should come to programs dressed based on the lowest temperature of the day, not the highest. Factor in wind chill as well. They should be dressed in layers to be removed if the day warms up. Rain wear(coat and pants) must be brought to class each day, even if there is no forecasted rain.

As the outdoor clothing industry grows, it's likely we are not aware of every great brand of outdoor clothing for children. Any brand outside of the required brands can be requested to be approved by e-mailing valleyforestschool@gmail.com.

If you would like to be resourceful, we first recommend checking out local second-hand gear shops like Roanoke Mountain Adventures for your child's clothing needs. Secondly, shop online for used items on websites like Mercari, Ebay, and Poshmark. If you can't find items used, search outdoor clothing websites for past season colors and styles for discounts. We will have a Gear Swap and Sell at our end of year Potluck and Campout.

If you question any item prior to purchase, please don't hesitate to verify you are purchasing the correct item.
